How do doctors find out if you have cataracts? I have not been to the eye doctor in three years, and over that time I have become progressively more nearsighted. Now, my prescription glasses do not even seem to be helping me. I am afraid that i may be get

In brief: Eye examination

The only way to know for sure whether your vision is affected by cataracts (or if you have them) is to have an eye exam.
Your exam will also check your eyeglass prescription to see if this is all that is necessary to change.

In brief: Cataracts

Cataracts can affect a person's vision, resulting in blurred vision, and in some cases progressive myopia (as you report).
Thankfully, a simple eye exam where your doctor would measure your vision can result in an accurate diagnosis of whether or not you have a cataract. If you have cataracts, there are now new intraocular lenses that can correct your vision, including the tecnis multifocal, restor, and crystalens - all which are designed to reduce your need for glasses after surgery. Toric intraocular lenses have also been designed for correcting astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery. For more questions - please do not hesitate to ask william trattler, md www.Centerforeyecare.Com miami, fl.

In brief: Slitlamp diated exam

The eyeMD can see a cataract at the microscope (slit lamp) especially when pt is dilated.
Evaluating pt's vision, glare testing, and being sure all other layers of eye are normal, helps the MD determine if the cataract is the cause of the decreased vision. Of note, excessive near work can cause progressive nearsightedness even in adults.

In brief: Many factors

Nearsighted can increase due to many causes of which a cataract is only one.
You may have cataracts. You may have a condition in which the eye's lens dislocates. Your cornea may have a weakend bulge. Get a thorough eye exam by a obsessive-compuslive ophthalmologist- usually an older md who is no longer dependent on the number of surgeries he/she performs.

In brief: A dilated eye exam

The diagnosis of cataract is made by observing the crystalline lens through a dilated pupil.
The normally transparent lens develops clouding. A clouded lens is called a cataract. Some cataracts cause increased nearsightedness in their early stages. See your ophthalmologist to find out.

In brief: Cataracts

Cataracts are caused by a gradual clouding of the lens of the eye.
Typically if the lens of the eye is cloudy, your vision will be cloudy, and glasses will not improve your vision. As the cataract gets thicker and darker, the power of the lens gets stronger, and you can get more near sighted. Your doctor will check you for glasses, and dilate your eye, and examine the cataract to see how cloudy it is. Based on the examination, you and your doctor can make an informed decision.
