In brief: Some, but not severe

You should always expect some discomfort after surgery, but a facelift generally does not cause severe pain.
People usually note areas of tightness, especially in the neck. Post op pain meds usually work well. Severe pain should be reported to your surgeon to make sure there is no bleeding under the skin or other healing problem.

In brief: Pain after surgery

Some discomfort after surgery is normal, tightness is a more common complaint, as is numbness.
True pain should ease up after a day or so, but make sure to contact your plastic surgeon if it is worsening. All the best!

In brief: Facelift pain

During surgery, a facelift surgeon uses local anesthesia to control pain.
As this wears off, the patient may experience some pain but this experience varies between patients. Some people require narcotic pain relievers after surgery while others only need over the counter products.

In brief: Not a lot

As a facelift is really moving skin and soft tissue it is not usually very painful.
Pain medication is prescribed after surgery, but most patients only use it a few days.

In brief: Variable thresholds

Patients tend to experience varying degrees of pain with some feeling minimal pain and actually reporting numbness in the facial skin while others may experience greater amounts of pain that tends to be easily managed with pain pills.
Many complain about the dressings being tight or sensations of tightness in the face itself.

In brief: Painful Facelift

Pain is very subjective after any surgery.
Generally, facelift pain peaks around 48 hours and is worse at night. Most patients take some narcotic pain med for the first day or two after surgery. Increasing pain beginning 5 days after surgery might be a sign of infection. Following up with your surgeon is very important for al facelifts after one week to insure proper healing.
