In brief: Dose equivalent

It depends on the dose of valium.
Iv medications will have a quicker onset than oral medications, but the actual pharmacodynamics or effectiveness of the anxiolytic remains the same. 5 mg of diazepam (valium) = 1 mg of Lorazepam (ativan).

If recommended by dentist, it should ease your anxiety prior to procedure.
