In brief: Depends on the cause

There are many causes of itchy eyes.
Several types of inflammatory conditions, allergic reactions, detergents, chemicals, and sometimes bacterial, viral or fungal infections can cause itchy eyes. Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.

In brief: Avoid the allergen

First--what is causing the itching and can you avoid it? Itchy eyes are often an allergy.
For occasional itching, take a bottle of artificial tears (do not use red out drops) and put them in the refrigerator. Cold tears can be used up to 4x per day for instant relief. You can also try a cold compress. There are otc allergy drops that work for some people. Common brands include zaditor (ketotifen) or alaway.
