If I have osgood-schlatter disease, can I still play a sport?

Yes. Use pain as your guide for sports. Ice the area x 10 minutes after sporting events. Use Ibuprofen products regularly to decrease inflammation. Stretch your quads regularly to reduce pain. Pad the knee if direct contact is anticipated, or repetitive falling on the knee. The pain should spontaneously resolve when the growth plate closes, between the ages of 16-18.

Please advise if it's bad to play netball if I have osgood schlatter disease?

Fine. Technically you can't really have osgood schlatter at your age, since that is a condition seen in skeletally immature patients. But if you've had osgood schlatter in the past and you've had no problems, then you can definitely play netball. If you are currently experiencing knee pain, then i would recommend seeing an orthopedist to get a current evaluation and diagnosis. Read more...

İ'm 20 years old male and İ have osgood schlatter disease, that mean my growth plate is still open?

Probably NOT. Osgood Schlatter's disease generally is a problem of 13 year olds. It does not involve the lengthwise growth plates but the "tibial tuberosity" which is the more prominent bump on the front just below the joint itself. Male growth plates are usually closed before females and should certainly be well closed by 20. If still having pain, it should be evaluated for other causes. Read more...

Which brace should I use to lessen the pain of osgood schlatter in my knees during sports?

Knee pad. Unfortunately, there is no specific brace for osgood-schlatter's disease. The pain is worsened with direct contact to the swollen front, top of the shin bone. Hence, padding this area is your best bet for reducing pain. Quad stretching and ice after activities reduces the pain from the tendon tightness, which is not addressed by bracing. Ibuprofen reduces the pain and swelling. Read more...

Depends . Depends on age of onset. Os is a form of apophysitis that typically affects pre-adolescent athletes, and can start at 10-11 years old.
