Genetic Disorder. Charcot-marie-tooth (cmt) disease is an inherited disorder of the peripheral nerves. Cmt and other inherited disorders are due to defects of genes for various proteins in the nerve fibers. Usually the first signs of CMT are that the child or teenager has problems with his feet. He may have ankle sprains, tripping, or appear clumsy. Special genetic tests are available to identify some types o cmt.
Genetic disease. The disease is a group of progressive disorders that affect the peripheral nerves and result in problems with movement and sensation. Peripheral nerves connect the brain and spinal cord to muscles and to sensory cells that detect sensations such as touch, pain, heat, and sound. It becomes apparent in adolescence or early adulthood. It is the #1 inherited disorder involving peripheral nerves.

Either Parent! Cmt is caused by defects in the genes for proteins that affect axons. Cmt can be inherited in several ways:autosomal dominant (faulty gene contributed by either parent);autosomal recessive (faulty gene contributed by each parent);or x-linked (gene on the x chromosome contributed by either parent.) in other words, unlike color-blindness, which is a sex-linked trait, CMT seems to come from either.
