In brief: Stop smoking

If you smoke, you must quit asap.
See your provider to get lung function tests and start on medications to make your breathing easier. Get the pneumonia and influenza vaccines. See about a pulmonary rehab program if breathing is interfering with normal activity.

In brief: See below.

At 23, I would see your doctor to get alpha one antitrypsin deficiency testing.
Also, if you smoke, quit.

First if you still smoke stop.
Then see physician for management strategies.

Starting from the first day you stop smoking, you entire body benefits. Everyday brings on improved health. There are many products now to help ease the withdrawal from tobacco. Unfortunately the worst part of the battle is mental. Best advice there is to keep trying to quit, many successful ex-smokers tried more than once. Plus, use a support group, be it an organized group or a group of friends. Next, there are inhalers that may help with the shortness of breathe, but this should be managed by a pulmonologist that can test your pulmonary function.
