In brief: Depends on cause

Can be due to long term infection with bacteria, h.
Pylori which can cause ulcers, and cancer of stomach. Can be autoiimmune, also can increase risk for stomach cancer. Decreases acid prod. Either can cause vitamin B12 deficiency (can affect blood count and neurological function), iron def, risk of gut infection. If h pylori-rx with meds for about 2 wks. Both need B12 replacement lifelong.
