I have severe insomnia. I also have thyroiditis. I take Xanax (alprazolam) or ativan for sleep. Sometimes it works and sometimes no. What can I do?

In brief: Insomnia

Benzos such as xanax (alprazolam) are not good options for treating insomnia.
Several viable options exist such as trazodone or seroquel, etc. Your prescribing doctor can help u taper off benzos and explore alternatives.

In brief: Get off benzos

Based on your question, in my opinion, you are at risk for developing benzodiazapine dependency.
You may end up with severe symptoms such as tremors, memory loss and even seizures from chronic use of xanax (alprazolam) and ativan, both of which can be very addictive. Discuss with your doctor a plan to slowly taper off while making sure your thyroid is well controlled. Consider melatonin. I rx trazadone.
