In brief: Manageable

The liver itself does not have any pain sensors, but like any operation, you will experience some pain from the incision.
Following surgery, patients are usually given a pca pump that delivers pain medication through an IV or an epidural catheter. Most people are able to switch to oral pain pills after 3-4 days. After about 2 weeks, regular tylenol (acetaminophen) is usually sufficient for any residual pain.
