If they have a rescue inhaler such as albuterol they should use as directed - keep them out of cold air, keep them comfortable in their own position of comfort and keep them calm.

Keep calm - anxiety makes you more short of breath, even though that is hard to do in the middle of an asthma attack; make sure you are breathing clean air - open window preferably unless it is really cold - away from smoke, fumes etc.
