In brief: Hard!
As the aha guidelines state- push hard, push fast.
It takes a significant amount of compression to help the heart pump blood- you are trying to compress the heart between the sternum and vertebrae. Compress the chest about halfway to the floor. If you find yourself in the position of performing cpr, any injury you might cause while performing CPR is far outweighed by the potential benefit.
