In brief: 1% Hydrocortisone cr

For a child older than a few months, with mild to moderate eczema, Hydrocortisone 1% cream (use a thin coat on the rash, twice a day, for 5-10 days) is cheap, available at most stores, and works well.
A daily moisturizing cream used 2-4 times a day helps to heal eczema & to prevent return of the rash. Examples: cetaphil, cerave, eucerin. Some people avoid creams with lanolin, aloe, or fragrances.

In brief: Prevention

Use moisturizing soaps, not just any soap.
Pat dry with towel instead of rubbing dry after bathing. Use moisturizer immediately after bathing. When all else fails, a mild steroid like Hydrocortisone can be very helpful on small areas. If the eczema is more widespread, see your doctor to find out if there is some underlying allergic cause rather than trying to treat whole body with cortisone.
