In brief: Pain+stiffness

If you have a painful ankle and xrays show loss of cartilage(arthritis) when nmedications, orthotics, braciing and shoe modifications do not allow you to function, you are a potential candidate for an ankle replacement.
Requires examination by an ortho surgeon with experience in procedure.Need adequate bone stock, correctable deformity(s), good skin/circulation .Sakvage is an ankle fusion.

Age and activity level also go into the decision between ankle fusion vs replacement

In brief: Decision making

The process itself involves deciding what it is good for you and whether you are good for it.
This is more difficult than it seems because there are many things that factor into the decisions. Too many things to go over in 400 words. The process itself is highly technical and is best done by an orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon. For more information: www.Orthodoc.Aaos.Org/footankl.

In brief: Need an evaluation

You need an evaluation with x-rays and MRI to determine how damaged the ankle joint is and if it truly needs replacement.
