Is it true that after having a baby, you can not get pregnant until you start having your period?

In brief: No.

It's not true. After delivery a woman can't get pregnant again until she resumes ovulation.
She can conceive with her first ovulation, i.e., before a menstrual period is ever seen. Since irregular bleeding (non-menstrual) post-partum is universal, and for women with irregular cycles, it is easy to misinterpret when cycles resume. Many surprise pregnancies happen this way.

No, occasionally one may ovulate and conceive prior to any menses.
Usually menstrual cycles occur after an ovulation cycle when conception did not occur.
