In brief: Amnesia

It is a mild anesthetic and causes one to relax.
For more involved procedures another anesthetic i.e. Novacaine, is also administered. Nitrous oxide also limits your memory of the appointment.

In brief: Like a good buzz...

Nitrous oxide, or "laughing gas" is a mild anesthetic that makes the patient feel "at ease" or slightly tipsy.
The effects are reversible--disappearing as soon as the gas is turned off. Some patients report or wild dreams or hallucinations during use of the gas. It is generally accepted as safe for the use with children and adults.
