In brief: Acute vs. chronic
In the acute phase after the injury, you may want to give your calf rest, elevation, ice application and compression using an ace wrap.
In subacute and chronic periods, using heat and ice interchangeably, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory mess (ibuprofen), physical therapy may be useful, provided there's no need for surgical intervention.
