Do Prozac and Lexapro (escitalopram) work the same way? Which one works best for treatimg depression and anxiety?

SSRIs. Prozac and Lexapro (escitalopram) are ssris for the treatment of depression. Lexapro (escitalopram) is also approved for treating anxiety, panic, and ocd, as well as in treating autistic spectrum disorders such as asperger's. While both medications are similar, the molecules are still somewhat different.
Essentially yes. They both work. Lexapro may have less associated side effects but stronger serotonin effects (so more serotonin side effects can be seen with lexapro). Lexapro was developed to get rid of the bits of proxac/ Paxil (paroxetine) molecules which cause other organ side effects. Side effects are still similar even if lessened. For sure, Lexapro seems to have less interactions with other medications.

This is an issue. That you will need to work through with your prescribing medical provider. Medications in this class often require 4 to 6 weeks to reach an effective blood level. You haven't had a long enough trial to say that the medication wasn't effective. By the way - alcohol use is contraindicated with Lexapro (escitalopram) and other ssri's. Take care. Read more...
Stop alcohol! Lexapro (escitalopram) may require at least 4-6 weeks for effectiveness -- and if you're still drinking 8-14 alcoholic drinks a week, you need to stop. You may not want to hear this, though. However. Alcohol can be a depressant in itself, and also reduce the effectiveness of lexapro (escitalopram). The combination of the two is not in your best interest if you want to recover. Please discuss with your psychiatrist. Read more...

Trial and error. I wish there was an easy answer to your query, but quite honestly patients often trial an average of three to four of these medications before they find that one that just works great. Sometimes patients even need a combination of medications to do the trick. Just tell your doctor that Lexapro (escitalopram) just isn't doing it for you, and you wish to try something else.
