In addition to the general anesthesia medications used, some surgeons use local anesthesia (eg, lidocaine) prior to making the incision.
Before clamping the arteries, patients receive intravenous Heparin to thin the blood and prevent the clotting of blood. Sometimes Papaverine is used to dilate veins and Nitroglycerin is used to dilate arteries.
