I have what I am guessing two swollen occipital lymph nodes that are very painful. I have not had a recent infection, sore throat, etc.?

Your occipital lymph nodes can respond by swelling to things as diverse as a systemic virus or vaccination & or a localized event like irritation from a skin rash or bug bites.
Those around the neck & skull are more noticeable since they often overlay bony structures or are near the surface.Most reach peak size in a few days & shrink within 2 wks. Have them checked if they bother you.

Your md will give antibiotics and Motrin for pain.
