Walking is the best exercise to manage claudication.
Supervised exercise program best but not paid for by U.S. insurance companies. Treadmill at home, in a gym or health center fine as is walking outside or at a mall. If walking is severely limited, water aerobics is a good way to improve fitness and make regular walking exercise eventually possible

The marathon runner can actually get pain that is very similar to claudication, but it takes him a very long time to get it.
After miles of running, if he pushes himself, his calves will burn/hurt. But by pushing himself more and more, he will be able to run further and further without pain. The same is true for people with claudication. Keep pushing forward, and your body will improve!

The pain is not damaging any tissue.
You just grin and bear it and walk through the pain. Till you cannot stand it then stand there till you can start walking again. Don't sit, it takes longer to recover. Do this every day for 20 minutes the first day then each week increase by five mins a day till you are walking 45 minutes daily.
