In brief: Malabsorption

Inability to absorb nutrients-malabsorption- can be caused by a bowel problem (inflammation or scarring), prior surgeries of the bowels, or an improperly functioning pancreas.
A good, cheap test of absorption is a b12, iron, and vit d level. Certain meds can affect absorption like acid reducing meds(ppis). A stool elastase test is a good test for pancreatic insufficiency. Enzymes can be prescribed.

In brief: Diagnosis??

If you're unable to absorb nurtrients you may need a GI or other work-up.
Hyperthyroidism, pancreatic insufficiency, intestinal malabsorption, inflammatory bowel disease - just a few examples of conditions which may need to be ruled out. Please discuss with your primary care doctor physician who will determine which studies you might need and to which specialist you may need to be referred.
