In brief: Median Nerve damage

Then the median nerve gets damaged and even after releasing it with surgery the hand wil continue with symptoms.

In brief: Nerve damage

Carpal tunnel syndrome (cts) is due to compression of the median nerve, inside the carpal tunnel.
Mild compression causes numbness and tingling in the fingers. As the compression increases, it becomes painful. Long-term compression leads to permanent nerve damage with loss of muscle around the thumb and loss of sensation in the fingers. This severly decreases hand function. See a hand surgeon.
