In brief: Many things

It could be fluid retention (edema) or arthritis.
Discuss this with a podiatrist.

In brief: Many things

There are a number of things that can cause swelling in the foot and ankle.
This is a very nonspecific symptom. I recommend that someone with swelling should be seen by orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon for a definitive diagnosis. One in your area can be found at www.Aofas.Org.

More detail would help in answering the question. is there redness? was there an injury? Comments of this nature would help us help you. A visit to your local podiatrist or orthopod can help. Incidently, if you can press your finger into the swollen area and an indentation occurs I would recommend you see an Internist even prior to seeing a foot specialist.
