In brief: Depends

Your work clearance will actually depend on the nature of your surgery rather than the fact it was done under general anesthesia.
The recovery from general anesthesia is short (1-2 days at maximum), while the extent of your surgery will mandate the decision for clearance.

In brief: At least 24 hours

How long you would need to wait before going back to work would depend more on the surgery.
Today's general anesthetic meds wear off very quickly. If you had a minor procedure and don't need any narcotic pain meds afterward, you might be able to work as early as the next day. But if you need a lot of medicine for pain, or your surgery limits your activity, follow your doctor's orders about work.
