What does a dark brown discharge after a pelvic exam that later turned into a clear mucus discharge mean?
Bloody discharge. The pelvic exam, especially if it included a pap smear, may have caused a small amount of bleeding from the cervix which then appeared to be a short term brown discharge. The clear mucous discharge was probably normal "fertile mucous". The discharge you are describing is common after an exam and does not mean you have a problem.

What could explain a dark brown discharge that later turned into a clear mucus discharge following a pelvic exam?
Taking a pap smear. Scraping the surface of the cervix to take a pap smear sometimes causes a little spotting that you may see in the next few days as a brown discharge. The clear mucous discharge may be a return to normal, especially if you are midcycle and having "fertile mucous".
