In brief: Genetics, sonograph

You should know about the genetics of cleft lip and palate, and you should have the prenatal screening for cl/p (sonographic diagnosis).
If using ultrasound, abnormality of fetal face may be identified at 18-22 weeks. After the detection, you would be referredt o a local cl/p team for detailed discussion regarding prognosis and postnatal management. Remember: ultrasound cannot detect all cases!

In brief: Depends on variables

If you had a simple cleft, not part of an inherited syndrome, the basics apply.
Risks of a cleft for any offspring runs 3-5%.Good nutrition, folate, avoiding alcohol and smoking may be helpful. Cleft palate is hard to pick up during prenatal ultrasound.Your babies doc can spot any issues on their first exam.

In brief: We usually

Have no control for human defects , unless you are exposed to radiation, chemicals or taking medications that can cause deformities or viral exposures -then you should be good .
Keep up with your prenatal care and vitamins. Alert your OB of any changes or exposures.
