Is it a good idea for parents to force their child to take music lessons?

In brief: Probably Not
I think this depends on how we define "forced".
If the child seems to have some interest, but may be lacking the initial motivation, then a little prodding may be helpful. But completely forcing a child who has no interest will likely be non-beneficial.

In brief: No
Encouraging an interest in music is very valuable, but forcing a child to take lessons is likely to be counterproductive.
