In brief: Several possible
Several possibilities.
Arthritis by itself can explain these symptoms, but that usually comes on gradually. Sometime the kneecap can sublux (slide out of it's normal path), then slide back in. That can leave you with the sensation of needing to click back into place. Straining the patellar tendon can also fee like this. Rest and ice your knee, but if it doesn't improve in a week, see your dr.
