In brief: RICE
Rest, ice, compression and elevation.
Depending on the joint, wold determine what type of splint to utilize, and what freedom of motion allowable to permit healing. Another helpful measure, if allowable given the medical condition, would be a trial of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or Etodolac whether over the counter or prescribed. Patience is important.

In brief: REST/MEDICATION
The first thing to do is discern why there is inflammation.
Is it from overuse or is there a more inflammatory and systemic process going on - i.e. Early rheumatoid arthritis. Rest, anti-inflammatory medication and splinting are initial therapies. Occasionally local cortisone injections are used. Physical therapy closely following to insure restoration of tendon function.
