What is an upper respiratory infection?

URI. Upper respiratory infection usually means a cold. Runny nose, congestion, fever, headache and cough all may be symptoms or any combination of them. Uri are viral infections and usually clear on their own with rest and liquids and tyelenol for fever and aches.
URI doesn't = cold. Uri = upper respiratory infection. The upper respiratory tract starts at the nasolacrimal ducts & ends at the larynx. Any infection by any organism in this area is technically an uri. But common usage has deteriorated the meaning to be "viral cold, " because viruses are by far the most common causes of uri. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/upper_respiratory_tract_infection.
