Arthritis in the hips can cause pain and stiffness.
Stiffness can increase with inactivity. Pain maybe felt with weight bearing and or at rest.

Pain is typically in the groin or posterior buttock area, range of motion is also limited in internal rotation and abduction as compared to the good side. Hip pain on the lateral aspect of the hip maybe related to back or maybe due to a gait abnormality.
