Is ativan or Xanax (alprazolam) better for extreme anxiety. Panic attacks. Etc?

See below. Their from the same class. Xanax (alprazolam) stays in your system for a shorter period of time, which makes it better for panic attacks but also makes it's addiction potential higher.
Depends. Ssris such as fluoxetine are first line choices for treatment of anxiety. Xanax (alprazolam) could be considered for short term as needed use (ie ffear of flying) however is intermediate duration of effect often necessities multiple doses per day for chronic use. This may be less so for ativan.

Which medicine is better for panic attacks, ativan or xanax (alprazolam)? I suffer from severe panic disorder and I am currently taking ativan and lexapro, which helps, but I still have constant, extreme attacks. I have been told by others who have the sa

Both . Both Ativan (lorazepam) and xanax (alprazolam) belong to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. They can both be used to treat panic disorder and both have similar side effects. Most important side effects are those affecting central nervous system: drowsiness, daytime sedation, memory impairment, physical and psychological dependence, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. Different people respond differently to these drugs, something that depends on a person's age, general health (in particular presence of liver disease) and concurrent use of other drugs. Your doctor's decision to prescribe Ativan is most likely based on factoring these and other aspects of your general health into this decision. There is no downside of asking your doctor about xanax vs. Ativan for treatment of your panic disorder. Read more...
Dr . Dr baskys provided very good information in his response. There have been a number of deaths attributed to the immediate release form of xanax (alprazolam). This causes concern by many prescribers. There is an extended release form as well. If you are continuing to have break through panic attacks on Ativan and lexapro, you might wish to consider a non-medication adjunct: medical acupuncture. It is a safe, non- intrussive method of dealing with anxiety disorders. Take care. Read more...

I had a panic attack and took a 1mg xanax, (alprazolam) then 9 hours later if was really stressed so I took a 0.5 ativan. Will I die?

No. You won't die. Dosage is too low and too much time elapsed between drug ingestion. However, who gave you such potent drugs? You need to be under medical supervision and best if you are in therapy to help with anxiety. Good luck. Read more...

I had to go to the ER today for a panic attack n they injected me with 1mg of ativan is it okay to go ahead n take my. 5mg of Xanax (alprazolam) now?

Probably. The half-life of ativan is about 10 to 20 hours, so there may still be avian in your system. Usually, xanax (alprazolam) is prescribed for control of symptoms similar to panic attacks. If you were currently having symptoms, it probably would be useful for you. If you were going to take it, just to stay on some type of schedule, not for symptoms, then you can probably skip a dose. Comprehensive Exam. Panic and anxiety are not due to panic disorder until other possibilities are carefully "ruled-out". It is vital you see a very competent psychiatrist for a comprehensive evaluation (history, exam, labs) before any diagnosis and treatment options are discussed. Medications can be helpful if it is panic disorder, and cognitive-behavior therapy is also helpful. Best wishes! Read more...
I'ma big fan of that. Hi, a lot of anxiety and panic depends upon what's triggering these feelings. One thing that patients have found helpful is paying close attention to precipitating factors, slow breathing during the anxiety, and attention to their thoughts in order to control the feelings. Keeping in mind that thoughts often =feelings, and that feelings do not=catastrophe. There's more, but i hope this helps. Read more...
