In brief: Carpal tunnel is

Associated with altered sensation in the thumb, index, middle and part of the ring.
It can affect the muscles of the thumb. Symtpoms can be intermittent, occasional or severe and long standing. Testing such as a nerve study/emg is often used to aid diagnosis and gauge severity. Treatment can range from splinting to injectons and even surgery.A very common disorder; many function well despite it.

In brief: Carpal Tunnel

If you're talking about the syndrome, you can expect hand/finger tingling/numbness and possibly weakness especially of the thumb.
If you're talking about the surgery, you can outpatient surgery , a small scar in the palm, and typically good relief of symptoms often within the first 24 hours. Stitches are typically removed two weeks later, exercise starts, and for most of my patients that's it.
