In brief: Multiple reasons
A sharp pain radiating into the leg can be indicative of multiple problems including a strained muscle, a pinched nerve, tendonitis, neuropathy (a problem with the nerves in the legs), or blood flow issues.
The ways to determine the cause is to figure out what makes the symptoms better & worse and a physical examination. Don't hesitate to ask if you have a more specific question!

In brief: Several possible
Causes including a disc herniation or annular tear of a disc.
Peripheral vascular disease & spinal stenosis can cause pain into leg mimicking sciatic pain as can hip & knee arthritis. Other causes of nerve compression in spine due to tumor, infection or fracture can be a cause. Pyriformis syndrome or sacroiliac joint issue can cause leg pain. Intrapelvic lesion can too as can lyme or shingles.
