In brief: Depends

There are many potential causes of lumbago or low back pain.
The most common causes are related to strain or injury to the mucles and/or structures of the lower spine. While a "cure" often depends on the actual cause, prevention can be obtained by maintaining a healthy weight, good flexibility, and a strong core. See your physician if you have pain greater than 2 weeks.

In brief: Back pain due to DDD

Most cases can be well managed in terms of controlling the symptoms.
This is typically related to underlying degenerative changes that are age related, can have a genetic basis & can be accelerated by being obese & by smoking. Lack of exercise leads to poor core muscle strength & further symptoms. By addressing all but the genetic aspect, one can usually do quite well & with otc meds as needed.
