In brief: Likely nerve

Problem possibly sciatica or radiculopathy from lower back.
See an orthopedist or neurologist. Sometimes, an injection may be needed if pain so severe.

In brief: How long.

It sounds like you are describing symptoms of sciatica.
These symptoms often resolve with time and relative rest. I would recommend physical therapy. If the pain has continued longer than a few months then a MRI should be done. This can help isolate the source and direct treatment. You may be a good candidate for an epidural as well. Discuss with your pcp.
