In brief: Stretch and PT
If you are having back pain and pinched nerve symptoms (pain and tingling into your leg(s)), you will need to try both stretching and may want to seek the services of a physical therapist (pt).
If you also have weakness, you should see a md immediately. Pt can be very helpful for patient with early (less than 3 months) pinched nerve symptoms. Over 3 months, you may need a neurosurgeon.

In brief: Back relief
The goal is to relieve the pressure on the nerve a diminish the local inflammation.
Resting in a position to relieve strain in that area is useful. Icing can be a great relief and the use of nsaids is frequently helpful. Massage is a good reliever but if the condition persists week after week or is worsening, then you need to be evaluated by your orthopod.
