In brief: Weight Training

The main risks with weight lifting too young is injury and stunting of growth.
In children, tendon attachments to bone are particularly susceptible to injury and irritation due to the growing body. Growth stunting can occur when growth plates in bone are overwhelmed by force. In general strength training is much safer than weight lifting and body building for children who are still growing.

In brief: Children should...

Avoid weight training until after the onset of puberty! children should play, and exercise by moving their own body weight: climbing rope, push ups, chins, sit-ups, running, etc.
This activity is limited by there own weight and less likely to cause joint or growth plate injury!
