By maintaining a well balanced diet, you are giving your body the "high octane" fuel that it needs for maximizing sports performance, thus reducing the chance of injury.

Nutrition in sports is also very much about recovery and growth as well. High quality carbohydrates, protein at each meal, diverse produce, and plenty of water. Sleep is the other key ingedient.

Nutrition is important so there is no loss of essential muscle and strain to heart or intestines.
The important sports nutrition are - glutamine, carnitine, dhea, and hydration.

A great deal of research has been done on nutrition, injuries and sports performance.
Atlhetes require at their peak performance levels 5-8x the amount of calories that a normal person consumes ie. Well over 10000 calories/day. Nutrition is key to repair muscle tissue, replenish electolytes, heal bone tendon interfaces, as such you are less susceptible to injury. Undernourished athletes do poor.
