In brief: It can ...

However it has not been proven to be helpful.
The age-related eye disease study (areds) demonstrated that high dose anti-oxidants are helpful in preventing the progression to advanced macular degeneration in individuals who have signs of earlier disease. Lutein was not part of the original areds study, but is currently being assessed as part of areds ii.

In brief: No one knows

Lutein is a strong anti oxidant that preferentially accumalates in the macula and protects against damage from uv light.
It is being studied as we speak in a big study by the national eye institute. Until now there have been anecdotal stories that it may have protective value but no studies to prove its efficacy. There is no evidence that it is valuable in children of patients.

In brief: No evidence

The genes your inherit from your parents play the biggest role in determining your susceptibility to amd.
There is no direct evidence that taking supplements can prevent amd, however studies show a correlation between healthier diets and a lower risk of getting it. The same lifestyle that is good for your heart is good for the eyes too. Genetic testing may provide insight into your risk for amd.

In brief: Mulivitamen c Lutein

A daily multivitamin with lutein is a good idea, as well as uv protection.
Lots of vegetables in the diet-- the kids will love that:).
