In brief: Safe by why start

Breast milk or formula provide balanced nutrition for infants for the first year of life.
Supplements do not improve infant nutrition.50 years ago they were introduced early because people made a crude & incomplete formula from evaporated milk (great for calf's not kids).Today we use solids to introduce texture & a new feeding skill. Six months is the recommended age.

In brief: Yes and no

Advised age of starting of weaning to solids is 4-6 months (ie - 16-24 weeks).
Esp if you are breast feeding, you could push it to later. Make sure the baby has good neck support before trying to start solids.
