In brief: Depends

Depends on the wisdom tooth's position and if its path of withdrawl is blocked.
Basically, any tooth is removed by separating the root from the surrounding bone (socket) and attachment. This is done by expanding the bone (rocking the tooth), or by using thin instruments, or by using a dental drill. The tooth might need to be sectioned (cut/split) to clear any obstructions. Anesthesia is anothe.

In brief: Forceps or drill

If the teeth are above the gums a forceps is used to rock the teeth is a figure eight motion till it comes out.
If the tooth is below the gum, has a root canal or curved roots or is broken then a drill is used to divide and or remove bone around it first. Then an elevator or forceps will be used. Do not try it on your self.
