In brief: Yes

Unfortunately, there are many causes for red eye.
Allergies can cause intense itching and can be treated with otc zaditor (ketotifen) or alaway. Another cause is eyelid inflammation (blepharitis) which can be treated with hot compresses 5 mins daily and eyelash scrubs with dilute baby shampoo. Red eyes can also be caused by growths on the eyes called pterygia or inflammation in the eyes (diagnosed by eye dr.

In brief: See your eye doctor

Tired eyes are often dry and red, and may benefit from artificial tears.
If you use drops to relieve redness (like visine(r)), they can lead to increased red eyes over time, so only use them occasionally. Eyes that stay red and irritated should be evaluated - there are often stronger treatments that your eye doctor may need to prescribe to treat the underlying cause of your symptoms.
