I was pain-free when i went to bed but had lower back pain this morning. Same mattress...Possible cause? Do not recall any injury yesterday.

Assuming you have only back pain, done nothing physically unusual in the preceding few days, and are not menstruating/ovulating, then most likely your sleep position strained your back or compressed the facet joints in the back of your spine.
Either way, such pain should be short-lived. If it isn't, something else is wrong.
