It is used to prevent the blogs clots from sticking in to the lungs even more and to prevent new clots from occurring

Usually followed by warfarin for a least 6 months. Presuming some DVT in leg? If other coagulopathies may need therapy for life.

In brief: Heparin....

Once you are discharged you will be taking low molecular weight heparin (this is given as a shot).
There are a number of brands available in the US and overseas. The idea is to provide you with immediate anticoagulation (blood thinner) while you are waiting for the oral blood thinner (warfarin/Coumadin) to have effect. You may be on shots up to 1 week after you are discharged.
