Arnold chiari malformation describes low lying cerebellar tonsils, and sometimes other posterior fossa abnormalities.
Chiari syndrome can refer to the abnormality described above, or to budd chiari syndrome. Budd chiari syndrome has to do with clotting in the venous system of the liver and has nothing to do with arnold chiari malformation.
