What causes sugar in urine?

Usually diabetes. One of the functions of the kidney is to absorb all sugars into the bloodstream & prevent their excretion in the urine. Diabetes, or conditions where blood sugar is very high, can overwhelm the kidney's ability to reabsorb glucose, causing it to spill out into the urine, a condition called glycosuria. Though diabetes is the most common cause, rare defects in kidney function can cause this as well.
