In brief: 3 - 12 months

An open or compound femur fracture is a severe, high energy injury that requires extensive treatment and healing time.

In brief: Patience!

The normal timeframe is at least 4 months.
We orthopods say that it isn't unusual for healing all the way until 8 months out. The fact that it is an open fracture does delay the healing. Also, if you are a smoker, that delays the healing as well. Be patience.
