In brief: Pain swelling

Deformity can occur with a severe fracture.
Less severe injurieay present only with pain and swelling and some subtle fractures may not be symptatic for a few days. There is wide range from a non displaced hairline fracture that doesn't manifest itself immediately to a severely fragmented displaced open fracture which looks broken - and the bone creates a wound in an open or compound fracture.
